Balancing NaBr + Cl2 → NaCl + Br2

How to Balance:

NaBr + Cl2 → NaCl + Br2

Word equation: Sodium Bromide + Chlorine gas → Sodium chloride + Bromine gas

Type of Chemical Reaction: For this reaction we have a single displacement reaction.

Balancing Strategies: This is a typical single displacement reaction. The chlorine pushes the Br out from the NaBr. We end up with Br by itself (as Br2) and the Cl with the Na (as NaCl).

You probably wouldn't want to breath in either Cl2 or Br2!

When balancing chemical equations our goal is to have the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the equation.

Only change the coefficients (these are the numbers in front substances).
Coefficients are the numbers in front of the molecule.
Never change the subscripts (the small numbers after elements).
Coefficients are the numbers in front of the molecule.
